A gallery offered me a "paid feature" spot and I did the math on the back of an envelope
So a gallery I won't name messaged me last week. Not a show. A "featured artist spotlight" on their account. €180 for one grid post and three stories. They were very warm about it, said they love my torn paper work, said it would introduce me to "collectors and curators."
I sat down and did the math like the logistics person I used to be. Their account has 11k followers, most of whom I'd bet have never bought a piece of art in their lives. At €180 that's basically paying for a lottery ticket with worse odds than the actual lottery. I said no and they got cold immediately, which told me everything.
Here's the part that bugs me. Two of my friends said yes to similar offers over the last year. One got a single comment. The other got nothing at all. Both of them said it felt good to be asked, like being validated, and I get that, I really do. Being asked feels like being chosen.
But nobody asks you to pay to be chosen.
I'm not anti paying for stuff, I pay for the booth at the local print fair, I'll pay for a listing that actually puts work in front of people who collect. This just felt like renting a room in someone else's house. Anyway. Curious if anyone else keeps getting these.

the getting cold immediately part is the whole tell honestly. anyone who actually believes in your work doesn't flip that fast when you say no, they just say fair enough and follow you anyway. i got two of those messages last month, one was €120 for "one story and a shoutout" and i laughed and then felt weirdly sad about it after. the math you did is right but i think the thing that gets me is how they sell you the feeling of being chosen, like the spotlight is the product. 11k followers who've never bought art is not an audience, it's a number. genuinely curious though, do you think there's ANY version of a paid feature that's worth it, like if it were a real gallery with a real collector base? or is the whole model rotten at this point. also torn paper work?? i need to see that, the edges must be a nightmare and i mean that as the highest compliment.
"the spotlight is the product" yeah. that's the whole thing and it took me embarrassingly long to see it. they're not selling reach, they're selling the fifteen minutes where you get to feel like someone with a career.
and the sad part after laughing, i know that one. you laugh because it's absurd and then it sits on you all afternoon.
to your actual question, yeah i think there's something. the only stuff that's ever worked for me was boring and reciprocal: a local print shop that let me hang two pieces for free and sold one, a woman who runs a tiny framing business and now sends people my way because i send her mine. no follower counts involved. it's slow and it doesn't feel like being chosen, which is exactly why it works. the second you're paying to be picked, you're not being picked.
