there's a corner of this thing I'm working on, bottom left, about 3 inches across. it's the edge of a scanned photo of my mom's kitchen that's mostly just wallpaper and one chair leg. I've re-torn the same paper over it four times now. acrylic wash, let it dry, hate it, tear it back. the layers are getting muddy and honestly that's the part I like. told myself I'd stop at noon. it's 2:40. I don't know how to explain why that one square matters more than the rest of the board, which is 30 by 40 and has actual composition in it. it just does. the whole piece is sort of orbiting that corner. if I get it wrong the rest is decoration. anyway. back in.

A woman wants a 4 metre mosaic for a hotel lobby in Halkidiki. Deposit was good money, more than I made in the whole of 2013. She has a Pinterest board. She sent it twice. I went to see the space on Monday. Grey marble everywhere, that cold beige lighting, and she wants a "warm, organic, hand-made feeling" in smalti. Smalti in a lobby with no daylight is money thrown into a hole. By year two it reads flat and dead and my name is on it. So I said no. Politely, with an actual reason, and offered her a smaller stone piece for the reception wall instead. Half the money. She hasn't replied. I sat on the balcony after the call with a coffee going cold feeling like an idiot, and then around an hour later something in my chest just let go. Fifteen years I've been taking things I knew were wrong because the month needed paying. I'm not doing it anymore. I'd rather grout a bathroom floor. Also my left thumbnail is black again from a bad hammer strike. Unrelated. Or maybe not.

A question I keep turning over, because I have done both and come to a firm conclusion. Early on I did the walk-in. A small gallery in a town I was passing through, a folder of mounted sheets, and the owner was perfectly kind and entirely uninterested. Nothing came of it, and I spent the rest of the afternoon annoyed at myself rather than at him. Since then I have sent a short, careful email with three images and a link, and let the work wait. Two of my three representation enquiries that went anywhere began that way. I also keep the folder ready on the off chance. That is not the same as marching in with it. The reason I ask is that there is a certain kind of advice floating about that insists on the personal touch, that the walk-in shows initiative, and I have never once seen it work in the way people claim. I would happily be told I am wrong. Perhaps it depends on the sort of gallery. So: which one do you do, and what did it actually get you? I am more interested in the failures than the successes, if I am honest.

Spent two days rearranging a piece about my grandmother's house. Every element finally sits where it should, the balance is actually there, and I keep staring at it wanting to scrape the whole panel clean. Technically it's the most correct thing I've made in months. It's also dead in a way I can't name. I think I over-planned the life out of it. When I work fast and sloppy the accidents carry the feeling. This one I measured. Nothing surprised me. The whole time I was arranging I already knew what every corner would do and now it's like looking at a photograph of a room instead of the room. Anyone else hit this? Where the thing is right and it's wrong precisely because it's right. I don't know if the fix is tearing a corner up or walking away for a week or just admitting this one was practice and moving on.

There's a crack in my studio wall that runs diagonal, from the top corner down toward the window. I've been staring at it for three weeks now. I keep catching myself mid-paint, brush loaded, just tracking that line like it's the most interesting thing in the room. Today I finally understood why. It's the same shape as the vein in someone's forearm I haven't been able to stop drawing. So I've been wrestling with a figure all week and the wall was showing me the answer the whole time. I'm an idiot sometimes. Anyway I traced the crack onto the canvas in charcoal before I lost it. We'll see if it survives. Does anyone else's studio object literally tell them what to paint or is it just me living with the ghosts of cheap plaster.

Found a scan from 2014 today, first pastel portrait I ever attempted. Same subject, same reference photo I keep coming back to because I'm stubborn. Put mine from last week next to it. The old one is so bad. I remember being proud of it when I finished. I remember thinking this is it, this is what I can do. And ten years later I can see every single thing wrong with it and I still kept trying the same face over and over until it finally came close to what I saw in my head. I think the win is not the new one. The win is that I didn't stop in 2015 when I should have, or 2018, or honestly last January when I nearly quit pastel for good. Nobody told me to keep going, I had to decide it myself, weeks at a time. And it worked out in a way I couldn't see from inside the bad years. Anyway. Old me would be so confused that the face in the picture is the same and everything else is different. 🙃

I've been working without a clock all week. Cyanotype needs sun and it needs a certain patience, and I got tired of crouching over the prints with my phone in my hand like some kind of anxious parent. So I just put three pieces out this morning and left them. Went back to the kitchen, made coffee, forgot about them properly. One came out almost white, the clouds had moved in and I'd missed it. Another one went so dark the seaweed disappeared into the blue entirely. But the third one, that one had been out during the exact hour the light was right, and it's the best thing I've made in a month. The paper knew better than my timer did. My grandmother used to say the tide waits for no one, but the sun is more forgiving. It comes back tomorrow. Not sure I'm going back to the stopwatch. Worth losing a few prints for the ones that actually listen.

I got a basket beside my chair catches every scrap that ain't big enough to save, and I been meaning to clean it out for I don't know how long. Yesterday I finally did and child, you should have seen it. Three generations of dresses in there. My mama's Sunday apron print. A piece of the curtains from the house I grew up in, which I didn't even know I still had. Bits from baby blankets I made for grandbabies who are grown now with babies of their own. I couldn't throw none of it away. Just put it all back in the basket and set it next to me again. Some folks would call that hoarding. I call it remembering, and there's a difference though I can't always tell you where the line is. Every now and again I'll pull a piece out while I'm waiting on something and just hold it. That's the whole of it. That's the quilt work, before the needle ever comes out.

Okay I need to know if this is a universal experience or if I just got unlucky. I signed with a small gallery last year, they were lovely, took my pieces on consignment, paid on time when things sold... and then just. never put anything of mine in an actual show. My work sat in their back room for months. I'd ask about upcoming exhibitions and get "we're working on it!" until I finally just pulled everything out. Turns out they were basically running a storage unit with a storefront and living off artists who were too nervous to ask where their paintings were. Anyone else had a gallery that took the work but never hung it? Is that a red flag I should've caught earlier or is it just... how some places operate? What's the longest your stuff ever sat unseen somewhere?

The craziest part about selling at local art fairs isn't the selling, it's the people who come up to your booth and say they've seen your work online. Every single time I'm caught off guard. I've got maybe 400 followers and post whenever I remember to, yet twice this summer someone walked up and said "oh you're the one who does those fall barn paintings" like I'm a celebrity. Meanwhile the piece I actually poured weeks into and thought would finally be "the one" has sat in my living room unsold for six months. My 8 year old said it looks like a sad house. Not wrong honestly. Trying to just accept that the internet works in ways I'll never fully understand and keep painting what I like. The barns sell because people want a barn on their wall, not because they're my best work. Feels like it should bother me more than it does.

Thirty-five years in and I still priced a job wrong last fall. Memorial piece for a family, granite, their father's hands resting on a book. I quoted by weight because that's how I buy the stone, so it made sense in my head at the time. Fifteen hundred for the material and rough shaping. Took me six weeks. The hands alone ate three of them. Every pass of the chisel I was thinking about how those were the hands that held their kids, and I couldn't rush it. By the time I'd finished the base and the lettering I'd logged close to two hundred hours. Two hundred hours for fifteen hundred dollars. Eight bucks an hour and that's before the shop lights were on. I told the daughter what it should have cost after she picked it up. She didn't care, she was happy with the piece, paid me extra out of nowhere because she said I undersold myself. That somehow made it worse. I keep a logbook of every job with hours against what I charged. That one's going to sit there for a long time reminding me that I priced labor like it was gravel.

I almost ruined a figure study yesterday because I couldn't leave the studio. The light was going, I knew it was going, and I kept poking at the edges anyway. Ten more minutes of that and I'd have repainted a perfectly fine passage into mud. It took me years to learn this and I still do it. There's a moment where the painting tells you it's done for the day and if you don't get up then, you pay for it the next morning with a wet rag and regret. Right now I have a rule of sorts: when I start adjusting things just to have something to do, when my hand makes a mark and I think hm, before I make it, that's the signal. Put the brush down. Walk out. Of course I had to ruin the shoulder of that figure to remember my own rule. Three hours yesterday, then an hour today scraping and restating what the light had already given me for free. Bof. Some lessons you re-learn every season.

One of my girls, she has been learning from me since she was eleven, she is now nineteen. This year I told her, apply for the state handicraft exhibition, what is the harm. She was so nervous she almost did not send the form. Yesterday the list came and her name is on it. When I saw it I felt more happy than the day my own work was first selected, I cannot explain it. She comes from a family where they were telling her, why you are wasting time painting, learn tailoring, make some money. Now her mother called me and she was crying a little, saying thank you ji. I told her, no thanks needed, your daughter did the work. Her fish border is very fine, the line work is steady like someone much older. She will go far. I am thinking also it is important for the other girls in the village to see this. When one of them goes, the path opens for all.🙏

There's a layer of charcoal dust on every single surface in here. The radiator, my coffee mug, the window sill, somehow the ceiling fan blades. I wiped the floor yesterday and it looked like I'd been making storm clouds out of pure soot by tonight. People come over and I watch them look at their hands after they touch anything. Wild that I've just accepted this as my life now. You'd think after twelve years I'd have figured out a system but no. The system is I sweep when I can't see the floor anymore and my whites are all technically greys. The funny thing is I love it. I clean the studio for a client visit or a photo and it feels wrong, like I've sanded all the texture off the room. The mess is proof something happened today. Some days the work is terrible but the mess is still there and that counts for something I think. This place is basically a crime scene of me trying.

City called in February about a plaza piece. Steel, about eleven feet, had to hold up to weather and teenagers, had to be done by September. I said yes before I'd even priced the steel properly. First time in a long time I took a job that scared me. Eight months of fighting that thing. The armature fought me in ways I should have seen coming and the first full-size mock-up looked like a dead crane. Scrapped it in June and started over. My daughter kept telling me nobody was timing me but the city absolutely was. Installed two weeks ago. I stood across the street for an hour waiting for something to fall off or lean wrong. Nothing did. A couple of kids were climbing on the base and that's what it's there for. It's still standing and it doesn't look like anything else in town. Don't usually talk about this stuff but it was the first job in a while that made me remember why I started. And I've got the welds to prove it held.

Had a little handheld radio on the shelf by my worktable for years. Played NPR or whatever local station came in clear. It died three weeks ago and I just never replaced it. Didn't even realize until today that I've been working in silence the whole time. And the work's been better. Honestly a little jarring to admit that. I thought the noise was helping me concentrate but apparently it was just company. Now I'm wondering what else I've got in here that I think I need and actually don't. The room is really quiet now though. My neighbor two units over is a woodworker and I can hear his saw through the wall sometimes. That's probably enough.

Made a little quilt for my grandbaby's own baby, back when she was expecting. Finished it three years ago come spring. This morning I was clearing out the closet shelf and pulled it out just to fold it proper, and I stood there holding it a good long while. Ran my fingers over them stitches and I could tell you exactly which evening each one was sewn. Which prayer was running through my head at that particular seam. People ask why we hold onto these things. Why not just buy a blanket from the store, it's warmer, it's softer, it's machine washable a thousand times. And I never know how to say it. That cloth got my hands on it and my time in it and my hope for that child poured into every corner. A store blanket can't hold that. I put it back on the shelf. But I tell you what, I think I'm gonna sit with it tonight and maybe patch the one corner that's wearing thin. Not because it needs it. Because I got more prayers left in me for that baby.

I still remember mine. Berlin, maybe ten years ago. A small space I'd been following for months, I sent a proper portfolio, real prints in hand, even went in person. The gallerist looked at my etchings maybe ten seconds and said "this is very academic" in a way that was clearly not a compliment. I was crushed for weeks. But honestly? That rejection made me rethink everything about how I presented the work. Not the work itself, I kept that, but I stopped sending this heavy theoretical text with every submission, stopped trying to sound like I belonged in a catalogue before anyone had seen a single print. Next space I approached I just showed the images and talked like a person. They took me on that summer. So now I wonder: is everyone's worst rejection the thing that actually fixed their approach? Or did some of you get your break in spite of never having that humbling moment? What did your first no actually change for you?

February in Gothenburg gives you maybe five hours of usable light and almost none of it lines up with when I can actually sit down. The last two weeks I've been arranging paper by lamp light and then having to redo half of it the next morning because the shadows lied to me. I bought one of those cheap full-spectrum lamps everyone swears by. I think it just makes me hate the sun more when it finally shows up. The palette I work with is all aged cream and grey so I notice even small shifts in the light, which is a curse. I've started keeping the current piece on the table overnight and just looking at it first thing, before coffee, in whatever light is there. Ten minutes, no touching. It's the only honest look I get all day.

One of my students, fourteen years old, was painting the fish motif from our Mithila tradition. She does very fine work for her age. Then she stopped and put down the brush and asked me, very politely, "Guru ji, why must the fish always look like fish? Why not make it my own way?" I did not have a quick answer for her. That itself troubled me. I have been doing this since I was a small child sitting beside my mother. Nobody ever asked me that. The fish is the fish because it always has been. It carries meaning. It is auspicious. But she is not wrong to ask. When I was learning, we drew from the memory of our mothers and grandmothers, not from any book. Every hand was a little different. My mother's fish were rounder than my grandmother's. So where does the tradition end and her own hand begin? I told her to finish one fish the traditional way first. Then she may make another one her own way, and we will look at both together and see what remains that is still Mithila. I do not know yet what I will tell her if the second fish is unrecognisable. Some of the old ones would say the tradition is lost then. I myself am not so sure. She is the one who will carry it after I am gone.

It's so cold in the shop right now the marble feels different under the chisel. Stiff. Holds the cut too long and then lets go all at once. I've worked stone in this kind of cold plenty of times, you just go slower or you bust it. But my hands are 61. They don't warm up like they used to. Twenty minutes in and the fingers are telling me things I don't want to hear. Dragged a propane heater out this morning and it's doing just about nothing against a concrete floor and a tin roof. I keep my good chisels in the house this week like they're houseplants. Nobody warns you that the cold part of the work gets harder than the heavy part. I can still move a two hundred pound block around, but I can't keep my own hands above fifty degrees. That's the trade, I guess. The strength stays longer than the circulation.

The gallery that loved my work but never sold a piece A gallery in my city took me on years ago, warm people, they hung my paintings properly, good light, private views with real collectors in the room. And nothing ever sold. Two years. Not one piece. They kept saying the work was beautiful, serious, exactly what their clients should want. Eventually I asked, gently, who was buying what. It turned out everything that moved was small, abstract, or cheap. My big figurative interiors just sat there looking at everyone. So my question is more of a confession with an ask: when did you figure out that a gallery's taste or enthusiasm has nothing to do with whether they can sell you? And what was the sign you ignored for too long? For me it was the phrase "we love it, give it time." They loved it for two years. My bank account did not.

A woman bought a piece from me three years ago, one of the small torn-paper ones I was never fully sure about. Yesterday she sent me a photo of it hanging in her new place, over a fireplace, next to this big ugly-gorgeous plant. She wrote "it's lived in three homes with me now." I don't know why that hit me the way it did. The piece wasn't my favorite. But she's moved it every time, found a wall for it each place. That's more than I can say for some of the pieces I'm actually proud of, which are sitting in my studio in a pile because I don't know what to do with them. Anyway I just sat there staring at the photo for a while. Felt weirdly less alone in the work. That's all.

There's a plastic injection factory on the edge of Žižkov and the man who runs the waste skip there has stopped charging me. He just waves when he sees my van. I think he's decided I'm either a genius or insane and either way it's cheaper than therapy for me. Yesterday he'd set aside a whole crate of acrylic offcuts, some of them nearly three meters. Clear, mostly, but a few in this green that I don't have a name for. I stood there like a kid at a candy counter. Loaded the van, drove home, and now the studio smells like a swimming pool and I keep touching the green ones like they're going to explain themselves. Twenty years ago I would have had opinions about whether this was art. Now I just sort the pieces and wait to see which ones start talking first. The material decides eventually, not me. The crate's still half-full in the corner and I have no plan for it. That's the best part of the week.
