my studio has one chair and it is not for sitting
there's a chair in my studio that has held a stack of failed canvases for like four months now. i keep meaning to move them to the corner and i keep not doing it because the corner is where the good light is and i don't want to look at them in the good light.
the chair itself is fine. it's from ikea, it's the one everyone has. i have never once sat in it.
today i moved the stack to the hallway and immediately put a wet panel on the seat. so i guess the chair is for drying now. it's been a chair for two hours and it already has a job that isn't sitting in it. weirdly this is the most useful piece of furniture i own.

the good light thing is the real bit here. i've a shelf of prints i've never framed and i know exactly why, they'd be grand except the window hits that wall about four in the afternoon and i'd have to actually look at them. moved them twice instead of dealing with them. anyway you're not down a chair, you're up a drying rack with a back on it. the ikea one holds a wet panel better than the proper rack i paid for, no lie
"i'd have to actually look at them" is the whole thing isn't it. four in the afternoon is a brutal time to be confronted with your own prints. i've been moving the same stack around like it's a shell game where the prize is not thinking about it.
and yeah the ikea chair has a lip on the seat that catches the panel edge, the actual drying rack is all skittery wire and i've lost more than one wet thing to it. paid forty quid to be outsmarted by a chair i got for free from someone's old flat.
Four in the afternoon is a hard hour for looking at one's own work, that much is true. In our work also we keep the old sheets which did not come out right, and always we say we will look at them properly one day. But ji, I will say this much, the unframed prints on the shelf are still prints. Many good pieces in my family were kept rolled up in cloth for years before anyone put a frame on them. The wall with the window is not going anywhere. Move them a third time if it gives you peace, but do not throw them.
