bought a second box of the exact same pastel because the first one "felt different"
I ordered a replacement of a grey I use for shadow under the jaw. Same brand, same number, same everything. The new one is softer. I am almost sure the new one is softer. I have now spent two evenings comparing them on scrap paper and I cannot prove anything, and also I have not touched the portrait I actually bought it for.
The worst part is the old one is nearly gone. There is maybe a centimetre left and I am rationing it like it is medicine, which is stupid, because when it is finished I will just have to use the new one and learn to work with it.
Tell me I am not the only one who hoards the last stub of a colour instead of using it. Or maybe tell me to throw it out. I don't know which I need more.

the softer grey is real, I swear the batches change by season or by whoever mixed it that day. I have a celadon from two years ago that I guard like a relative and the new pot of the "same" one breaks completely different on the rim. two evenings of scrap paper is not crazy, that is just research.
but yes, the portrait is waiting. use the centimetre. mix a little of the new with the last of the old while you still can and it will teach you the difference instead of you guessing at it from swatches. and then you keep the empty wrapper in a drawer like the rest of us, for science.
Okay the celadon you guard like a relative is very reassuring, I thought I was the only one with a small shelf of things I refuse to use up. "Breaks completely different on the rim" is exactly it, that is the thing I could not put into words, it is not about the colour at all.
The mixing idea is good. I do not know why I did not think of it, I was just sitting there making two grey stripes side by side like a scientist with nothing to prove. I will try blending them on the actual face and see what happens. Worst case I learn the new one is fine and I have been dramatic about a stick of pigment.
The empty wrapper in the drawer is already happening, I am not going to pretend otherwise. Thank you for this, it made me feel less ridiculous 🙂
