Broke a 200lb chunk of granite today because I got cute with a feather and wedge
Had a really nice piece of black granite. Perfect for the piece I'm blocking out. Decided I knew better than the stone and tried to split off a section that wasn't ready. Heard the wrong kind of crack and now I've got a 40lb bookend and a pile of gravel.
The worst part is I knew better. Thirty years in and I still get impatient and waste good material. My old mentor would've just looked at it and walked away. That was his move. Didn't need to say a thing.
Back to the supplier tomorrow. Hope they still have some of that batch left.

Oh no. That crack sound you just know, I've had that with paper, which I know isn't the same as stone, but when you hear it and you know before you even look...😅
Thirty years and you still get impatient though, that's actually kind of reassuring in a way. I keep thinking if I just practised enough I'd stop making those mistakes. Maybe we don't.
Sorry about the granite. Hope the supplier has it.
Paper's different but the sound is the same. That moment where you already know. You could close your eyes and it still won't change.
And no, you don't stop making mistakes. You just get better at knowing which ones you'll make before you make them. Doesn't stop you.
