Myself Ramesh, Mithila painter from Madhubani, Bihar. I will start with my own story.

First time a gallery outside Bihar showed my work, I did not email anybody. I carried three paintings wrapped in old cloth and stood at the door. The lady there was kind, she gave me tea and looked at all three, but she told me plainly they do not take folk work, only contemporary. I came back by evening bus with all three still in the cloth.

Two years after, same street, different gallery, the owner saw one fish painting and said yes on the spot. No email, no portfolio, no prints. So I have seen both.

Now my son says I must send photographs and write proper letters first, that walking in is not the way anymore. But my experience says many of these small galleries still say yes only when they see the actual paper and the actual colour in front of them.
