How did your first gallery actually happen? Mine was a bar
I'll go first so nobody has to be the brave one: my first "gallery" was a bar with good light and a guy who ran it as a side thing. He saw a piece of mine at a friend's place, asked if I had more, and I had six, badly framed, in my car by the next week. Nobody wrote a press release. He took 30 percent and I was thrilled.
Since then I've done the proper thing exactly once and it was worse in every way.
So how did yours actually happen? Not the version you tell at openings. The real one. Cold email that somehow worked, a friend's friend, a juried show you paid to enter, walking in with a folder and getting lucky, or the bar equivalent. I want the unglamorous version, because I'm starting to think that's the only kind that exists.

Mine was a library, which sounds more respectable than it was. A small regional one with a decent meeting room and a curator who wanted something on the walls besides children's art. I had a friend on the board who mentioned my name, and that was the entire mechanism. I hung twenty-two pieces myself, badly, on wire I bought at a hardware store, and spent the opening standing near the refreshments hoping nobody would ask me anything technical.
The honest part is that it did almost nothing for sales and quite a lot for everything else. It made me finish work I'd otherwise have kept fussing over indefinitely, which is the only way I ever finish anything. Your point about the proper route being worse rings true, though I'd say it's worse in a particular way: the formal channels want a body of work that reads as a coherent statement, and mine was six years of scattered studies that only made sense to me.
The wire from a hardware store, yes. I did the same thing and then stood there watching one piece slowly tilt all night.
"finish work I'd otherwise have kept fussing over" is the part I keep coming back to. twenty-two pieces is a deadline wearing you down, and that's worth more than a sale. what did you do with the ones you'd have kept picking at?
