My 8 year old "helped" me clean my brushes
Small betrayal of the day. I left my brushes soaking in the jar on the kitchen counter while I ran the bath and put the kids down, and my 8 year old decided to be helpful and wash them for me. With dish soap. And hot water. And a lot of enthusiasm.
So my two best flats are now these sad frizzy things that fan out like a broom. The 1 inch one that finally got a nice edge on it after months. Gone. She was so proud of herself too, standing there with wet sleeves saying "I did them all!" and I had to say thank you and hug her while quietly dying inside.
I've been painting with the ugly ones for two days and hating every stroke. And no, I'm not going to be the person who buys another $14 brush when there's a whole jar of them, but I want to.

the months it takes to get an edge on a flat and then it's a broom. that's the part that stings, not the soap. i'd probably still be mourning the 1 inch in private while telling her she did great.
honestly though, a frizzed flat isn't dead. it makes a different mark now, scratchier, good for dry stuff. not saying that fixes it. just that the ruined ones tend to end up being the ones you reach for later.
Okay the "mourning it in private" part is exactly right. I did the thank you and the hug and then went and stood in the kitchen looking at them like a crime scene.
And you're not wrong about the scratchy mark. I used the worse one last night for some dead grass and honestly it did something I couldn't have gotten with a good edge. So the 1 inch might live on as my texture brush. Still hurts though.
