My cyanotypes develop beautifully in seawater but the salt keeps crystallizing on the paper after drying
I've been developing prints in the Atlantic for two years now, and I love what the salt does to the blue during washing. But when the paper dries there's always a fine white bloom across the surface, like frost that won't lift. I've tried longer freshwater rinses after, soaking the washed print overnight, even ironing it flat. The crystals come back around the edges no matter what.
I know some chemists would just tell me to stop using seawater, but I can't. The water from Matosinhos beach gives me a tone I've never matched with tap water, this deeper green-blue under the Prussian. It's not a technical accident, it's part of the piece. But the bloom makes it look unfinished, like a bad print, and I can't tell if I'm seeing it as a flaw or if it actually is one.
Has anyone lived with a material that fights back like this and just accepted it as part of the work? Or is there a fix I'm not seeing?

I work with paper conservation and we deal with salt bloom fairly often, though usually from old prints that have been near damp walls, not seawater. The key thing is that once salt gets into the paper fibers, a freshwater rinse on top doesn't always pull it back out, the salt sits deeper than the surface wash reaches. You'd probably need to actually submerge the dried print and let the salts redissolve out over a longer soak, then dry it, and even then it can take a couple of cycles.
That said, I understand why you won't give up the seawater. That tone underneath the Prussian is doing something the tap water simply can't, and it's a real quality in the work. I'd look at whether the crystals are coming from the paper itself or from the print surface, if it's purely around the edges, it may be migrating out of the paper core as it dries. A final bath in diluted acetic acid sometimes helps shift the equilibrium so the salts stay in solution longer while drying. Worth a test strip before you risk a good print.
The chemistry answer makes sense, but I'm on your side about keeping the seawater. You've got something specific there, that green-blue under the Prussian, and that's not the kind of thing you trade away for convenience. I've spent thirty years working with materials that fight back and I've learned the good ones always do.
One thing worth trying, if the conservationist's soak doesn't settle it: let the crystals form and then brush them off dry before any rewetting. Sometimes the bloom sits on the surface even when the salt underneath doesn't, and brushing gets the frost off without pulling the paper through another wet cycle that can shift your tone. I've seen salt do strange things on metal and glass over the years, and it rarely behaves the way you'd predict on paper.
If that fails, maybe just learn to read the crystals as part of the print. Halos have their own beauty. But I know you want the blue, not the frost.

Thank you for understanding the seawater part. Most people just tell me I'm being stubborn. It's more that the water from Matosinhos is carrying something I've never been able to mix in a studio. There's a living green in it, under the blue, that's been there since I started. I'm not sure I'd know my own work without it.
