Nothing in the kiln tonight so I'm just sitting here looking at it like an idiot
fired a load this morning, twelve pieces, mostly the leaning ones with the faces half sunk in the glaze. opened it at 6pm. nine came out fine. three cracked right across the mouth, clean, like someone took a knife to them.
the annoying part is they were the good ones. the three I actually liked.
they're on the bench now and I can't throw them away yet. I know I will, probably tomorrow, but tonight they're just sitting there being better than the survivors. I keep picking one up and putting it down.
weird day. warm though. if you're in Valencia and you hear a small crash around 2am, that's me.

Oh honey, I know that bench. I've got a quilt top folded up in the cedar chest right now, one I put six months of evenings into, and the seams went crooked in a way I couldn't live with. Couldn't throw it out either. Sat on it two years before I finally cut it up for potholders. Some of it's in my granddaughter's baby quilt now. So don't rush yourself about tomorrow. The three that cracked aren't the failures, they're the ones that taught you where the edge is. Nine out of twelve is a good firing, even if it don't feel like it tonight. Let them sit there a spell. 🙂
Two years on a quilt top and it ends up as potholders, that's brutal. But then some of it is in a baby quilt, which means those crooked seams are going to be under a sleeping kid for the next twenty years without anyone complaining about them.
Mine are still on the bench. Picked one up again this morning, put it back down. I think you're right, the crack is telling me the wall was too thin at the mouth, I just didn't want to hear it yet.
Grandmothers and their patience, joder. Mine does the same thing with me, she never throws anything out and she's never once been wrong about waiting.
