someone bought the piece I made from my brother's old work shirts. the one I almost didn't put in the show because it felt too personal, like hanging my grief on a wall for strangers to walk past.
the buyer didn't know any of that. she just said it reminded her of her dad's shed. all the things he kept that didn't make sense to anyone else.
I wasn't ready for how that would feel. like the piece got adopted into someone else's story. like it's not just mine anymore.
still crying about it honestly. good crying.

This is really beautiful. That thing where the most personal piece is the one that makes someone else feel seen, it's strange and kind of profound. Like you held it close enough that it stayed true, and that's what let it travel.
I've had that happen a few times with pieces I nearly didn't show. Someone sees something I thought was only mine and finds their own memory in it. It still surprises me every time. In a good way.
yeah exactly. it's like the thing that almost didn't see the light is the one that actually connects. I keep thinking about that phrase "held it close enough that it stayed true", that's it. that's the whole thing.
glad it's not just me who's had that surprise. feels like the work knows better than I do sometimes what it's for.
