ngl, i've got a pile of canvases in the corner that are like, 80% done and just staring at me. i know the move is to just push through and finish them but honestly i've been spending more time scrolling pinterest for new ideas than actually committing to these existing ones. pretty sure i've only finished like, 3 paintings this entire year. anyone else get stuck in this loop? lol
ah sure, i know that feeling all too well. it's like the blank canvas calls to you with all its promise, but the one that's half-done just… glares. you know? i reckon it's the same for me with the carving sometimes, got a whole pile of blocks roughed out for a series but then a new image pops into my head and suddenly i'm off chasing that instead of finishing what i started. my wife'd tell you i've the attention span of a goldfish when it comes to seeing things through sometimes, especially if it's getting tough. but then again, sometimes stepping away for a bit and getting that new spark is exactly what you need to come back to the old thing with fresh eyes, isn't it? maybe just give yourself permission to chase the new idea for a day or two, then go back and wrestle the old ones into submission. often finds me getting them done faster after a break like that.
lol yeah, the goldfish attention span is a mood. i feel you on the new spark though. it's hard not to chase it when it feels so much more exciting than wrestling with a piece that's already being difficult. maybe i just need to embrace the 'glaring' phase for a bit longer. or just slap some more paint on it and call it done, like you said. we'll see which path to misery i choose.
oh man, i feel this. the siren song of a fresh idea is so loud when you're staring down something that feels like a slog. i've got a stack of mixed-media pieces from last fall that are so close but keep getting sidelined. sometimes i think the best thing is just to pick one, any one, and just make yourself slap something on it for 15 minutes. doesn't have to be good, just has to be done. good luck with the pile.
