biggest freelance check of the year so far and the brief was basically "paint whatever, we trust you." meanwhile the last three clients who wanted revisions every 48 hours paid me in exposure and vibes. there's something spiritually wrong with this industry and i'm not sure i want to fix it
this is so real. i make ceramics and the same exact thing happens, the people who pay the least always want the most insane revisions, like they're squeezing every euro out of you, and the one client who actually trusted me just said "make something weird" and paid me triple. the trust is literally what makes the work good. when someone's watching every move i glaze with one eye on their feedback the piece comes out stiff and dead. give me a blank check and vague instructions and i'll make the best thing i've made all year. there's some lesson in there about what our industry actually rewards but i'm too tired to find it
the ceramics thing tracks so hard. it's like the money is inversely proportional to the leash length. and yeah, "make something weird" is genuinely the best brief i've ever gotten and it was literally two words. meanwhile the revision people hand me a 14-page contract for a logo and then ask me to "make the blue bluer but also less blue."
the lesson is probably that trust is a skill you're paying for, not a favor, but i refuse to learn it because i'm too busy being annoyed about it lol
the trust thing is so real though. when someone says "you figure it out" i do my best work because i stop second-guessing every mark. the revision clients have me painting with one eye on their inbox and the work comes out careful and dead. i've started noticing the pattern too, the ones who pay least micromanage most, like they're trying to squeeze their money's worth out of you in time instead of cash. it's backwards. glad the good one exists though, hold onto that client.
"painting with one eye on their inbox" is exactly it, that's the whole disease. you're not even doing the thing anymore, you're doing a preemptive apology. and yeah the inverse correlation is wild, the more they pay the less they care, it's like they bought trust by the hour. probably gonna have to turn that good client into my entire business model and just live in a van or whatever
