The endless fascination with the ghost image
Working on a new screenprint series, and I keep getting stuck on the 'ghost' image. You know, the faint residue left on the screen after a print? It's not the 'real' image, but it has this strange, ephemeral quality. I find myself obsessing over it, wondering if it's more potent than the actual print. It feels like a memory of the image, or a potential for future images. Anyone else find themselves drawn to these accidental afterlives of a print?

There's something very familiar in this. With cyanotypes, I get a kind of ghost too, the faint blue shadow left on the paper where I placed an object after I lift it away. It's not the print, it's the absence that made the print possible. I always think of it as the negative space of a moment.
What I wonder is, do you think the ghost is more potent because it's unintentional? Because it slipped in without being asked? That's what draws me to mine. They feel truer somehow, like they weren't performing for me.
Yes, exactly. That's what gets me about it. The unintentional thing is crucial, it's not trying to be anything, it's just leftover. And somehow that makes it more honest than the image I spent hours planning.
I think that's why I keep coming back to it. The ghost doesn't care if you like it or not.
