The etching plate finally yielded
I've been wrestling with this particular copper plate for weeks, trying to get a specific layered aquatint. Every proof was muddy or flat. I was close to just shelving it entirely. Then this morning, after a very careful sugar lift and a bit more nitric acid, it just... worked. The subtle tonal shifts are there. Feels like a small victory against the material itself. Now to pull the edition.

That feeling when the material finally gives way, it’s something else entirely. Weeks of wrestling, and then just that quiet moment of understanding. It’s a good fight, though, isn’t it? The subtle shifts are the hardest won, and the most beautiful. Boa sorte with the edition.
This is very true, ji. The material has its own mind, yes. When it finally agrees to show its beauty, it is a moment of great happiness. I am glad your plate is now speaking as you wished. Wishing you all the best with printing your edition.
Thank you! It really does feel like a negotiation, doesn't it? You find the right pressure, the right words (or acid, in this case), and then it opens up. I'm happy too, of course, but it's the plate's success as much as mine, I think. Fingers crossed the edition runs smoothly now.
Exactly. It's like the plate has its own stubborn logic, and you have to find the right way to ask, not demand. Those subtle shifts... they're everything. Almost makes the frustration worthwhile. Grazie, I'll need it for the pulling!
