the gallery that said "we'll keep your work on file", what did that actually mean for you?

the first gallery I ever got a real response from hit me with "we'll keep your work on file" and I treated it like a win for like a full month. walked around feeling like I'd made it. spoiler: never heard from them again lol.

so genuinely asking, has that ever led anywhere for anyone? did one of these "on file" galleries actually come back months later with something real, or is it just the politest way of saying no? tell me there's a success story out there so I can stop wondering if I should've followed up like five times 💀

I got that once and I did the same thing, walked on air for weeks. Then silence. I convinced myself it was because they were too busy and one day I'd just get a call out of nowhere. Never happened.

I don't think it's a lie exactly, but it's the easiest thing to say and it costs them nothing. In their heads they probably did mean to look again someday. We just aren't that someday.

The one thing I'll say is it taught me to stop measuring progress by what galleries say and start measuring it by my own work. Which sounds like a motivational poster but I mean it practically. A real yes looks different from that. It has dates and details in it. If it's vague, it's goodbye.

Ah the old "on file", sure I've a drawer full of files that never opened again, and that's just the mental ones, never mind the gallery's. 😅

But look, you've hit the nail on the head with your last bit there, and that's the thing I'd take from it actually. The measuring your own work part. I spent years reading tea leaves off a gallery's tone of voice, "oh they said 'interesting' not 'nice', that's a good sign", sure that's no way to live. You'd go grey from the guessing.

The real kicker for me was when a gallery eventually did say yes, and it came out of nowhere, not from any file or follow-up. Just someone saw a print at a market stall and rang me up. No file involved. The thing that got me in the door was just me being out there doing the work, not me being polite enough on an email.

So I wouldn't beat yourself up over the five follow-ups you never made. If they'd wanted you, they'd have found you. And now you know it for next time, you're not chasing their "maybe", you're just getting on with it till a proper yes lands in your lap.

Which it will, by the way. The work's the thing. 👍

the "interesting vs nice" tea leaf reading is so real it hurts. i did that exact thing, catalogued every word like it was a tarot spread. "they said 'compelling' not 'beautiful'" and built a whole narrative off it. years of my life spent decoding two-word emails lol

and yeah, the yes coming out of nowhere with no warning is the part nobody talks about. all that energy spent on follow-ups and signals and in the end it just... lands. makes you wonder if any of the rest of it mattered at all.

the "we did mean to look again someday" bit is honestly the kindest read and probably the most accurate too. they're not evil, they're just... never going to. it's like the art world version of a dying houseplant. they meant to water it.

and nah that's not a motivational poster, that's just survival. if i measured my worth by gallery response times i'd have quit painting in 2019 and taken up pottery or something. the real ones show up differently, you're right. takes a while to recognize the difference but once you do it saves you so much pointless waiting around

copy-pasted that exact "keep your work on file" into so many emails when I first started, I could've just saved it as a template 💀

never once led anywhere for me. not one follow-up, not one "hey remember us," nothing. and I beat myself up for years thinking it was a follow-up problem, like if I'd just emailed the right amount of times something would've unlocked. then I realized the galleries that actually wanted my work didn't leave it vague. they said "send us more" or "come by in the spring" or literally asked for a studio visit. the ones that meant it said something concrete.

not saying never follow up once, sure, one nudge is fine. but I wasted so much energy trying to decode polite silence that I could've spent just getting the work in front of the next person. the ones that want it don't play that game.

but yeah, you're right about the concrete thing. it's wild how obvious it is in hindsight. nobody who actually wants your work is gonna be cryptic about it. "on file" is just their way of closing the tab without having to say the words.
