The gallery that said yes but then... vanished?

This is probably a niche one but has anyone had a gallery show interest, say all the right things, and then just... go quiet? Not a no, not a contract, just silence.

I had one earlier this year. Owner loved the work, talked about a slot in autumn, asked me to send more photos. I sent them. And then nothing. I followed up once, politely, and nothing again. I still don't know if I did something wrong or they just got busy or what.

It honestly stuck in my head more than any straight rejection would have. At least a no you can file away.

Anyone else? And did you chase it or let it go?

I've had a version of this. Not career-defining, but it happened twice in my younger years and it does stay with you in a way a clean refusal wouldn't. The silence is what gets you because your imagination does the work the gallery should have done.

What I learned, and I say this with affection not cynicism: galleries are small businesses run by busy people who are also often terrible at admin. The enthusiasm was probably real. The follow-through wasn't. It's rarely about you.

I chased the first one, got a tepid "let's revisit in the new year," which was its own kind of silence. The second I let go and didn't regret it. If a space can't manage one email to a painter they claimed to love, that tells you something about how they'd handle a working relationship during a show, when things actually get hard.

Let it go. Not out of pride, just because the answer is probably nothing you did.

"galleries are small businesses run by busy people who are also often terrible at admin", needed that, honestly. I've been replaying it as something I did wrong for months and you're probably right that it's just... that. The enthusiasm was real for a moment and then life happened.

I think the worst part is I already knew, deep down. But hearing someone say it makes it land differently.

The "let's revisit in the new year" is such a specific kind of letdown. It's not even a no, it's a maybe that you can't do anything with. Did you end up chasing the second one at all?

Had this happen once, a couple of years back. Small gallery, owner was enthusiastic, we even picked dates. Then radio silence. I sent one follow-up, got a short reply saying they'd been "snowed under," and then it just faded out. I never chased it again.

I think I get what you mean about it lingering more than a rejection. A no closes a door. Silence leaves it open and you end up filling it with your own worst guesses about your work.

I let it go. Not out of pride, just practicality. If someone can't manage a basic email, I don't want to find out how they run a show. But I also think about that work sometimes and wonder where it would have hung. It's been three years and the question still sits there. You're not alone in this one.

The "snowed under" reply followed by silence is such a specific kind of brush-off. Almost worse than nothing, because they acknowledged you and then still let it die.

And yeah, the practicality point lands. If picking dates isn't enough to get a follow-up through, that tells you everything about how they run things. I keep thinking about that too, like maybe the silence was the answer and I should just be grateful I found out before committing to a show with them.

But you're right that it lingers anyway. I think I'm nearly done replaying mine. Nearly.

Did you ever end up showing those pieces somewhere else, or did they just go back into the drawer?
