The gallery that wanted my work "cleaned up", what's the worst note a gallery ever gave you?
Went and looked at a space I was excited about, first meeting, and the guy says my work is "interesting but could use some polish." Told me my figures were "too raw" and asked if I'd consider softening things up for the clientele. I laughed at him. Literally laughed out loud. I do not paint things soft. That's the whole point of me.
Walked out and never looked back. Still glad I did, but man it stings when you know they saw your work and just wanted a different person's work with your name on it.
What's the worst note or comment a gallery or rep ever gave you? The one that made you question whether they even saw the same paintings you made?

Working in paper conservation, I spend half my week literally removing things people think are "messy" or "unpolished" from old works. So I've been on the other side of that conversation, internally, many times. There's a difference between cleaning up actual dirt and asking an artist to sand off their own edges.
I've walked out of one of those meetings too. Not laughed, just stood up and left. He later called and said they "misread me." They never misread the work. They read it fine. They just wanted it to read like someone else's.
Good for you for laughing. That's the honest response.
paper conservation is such a good angle on this. you're literally the person deciding what's "real" about a work hundreds of years later, and the rest of the art world is out here trying to do the same thing to living painters. at least the old masters don't have to hear the notes.
that "misread you" call is so funny though. sir, you read me perfectly, you just thought i'd change. that's not a misread, that's a negotiation.
ok see THIS is the part that gets me. you spend years maybe even centuries deciding what's "real" about a work, and half the time you're literally erasing what the artist meant to leave there. that's a whole philosophy. and meanwhile i can't get a gallery to hang a painting that isn't pristine.
but that misread thing, you said it better than i could. he didn't misread me at all. he read me exactly right and thought i'd bend. and that's the part that stings more than the polish comment honestly. the assumption. like my whole thing is negotiable.
what's the weirdest thing you've ever been asked to "fix" on an old piece? i bet you've got stories that would make me want to scream.
oh man, that's a whole other kind of authority over art, right? you're the one deciding what gets preserved and what's just... dirt. that's power. and yeah, you hit it exactly. there's a difference between actually cleaning something up and making it smaller.
