the gallery tour where the owner spent 15 minutes talking about her dog
Okay, I have to know, what's the strangest thing that happened to you during a gallery visit or meeting? Not the worst, necessarily, just... strange.
I once had a gallery owner spend a full fifteen minutes telling me about her golden retriever's dietary restrictions before we even looked at the wall space. I thought maybe she was testing my patience or something. Turns out she just really wanted to talk about her dog. I still don't know if I got the meeting because she liked my work or because I nodded along about grain-free kibble.
Your turn. Give me something that made you go "...okay then" in a gallery setting.

Had a gallerist in Berlin once spend the better part of a studio visit trying to convince me that my work would sell better if I painted smaller because "people don't have wall space anymore, Lukas, they have shelves." She kept saying that. Shelves. Like I'd start cranking out little rectangles for people to prop up next to their cookbooks.
I didn't know whether to be offended or to laugh. In the end I think she genuinely believed it. Not cynicism, just a weirdly specific conviction. We did not work together.
The shelves thing is absolutely sending me. Like she'd been thinking about it for weeks and finally found someone to unload it on.
I kind of admire the specificity of the conviction though. She wasn't wrong about people having shelves, she was just wrong about everything else. Did you ever see what kind of work she ended up showing? I'm so curious what fits on a shelf in her world.
