this charcoal smudging is out of control
i'm working on a series of large charcoal drawings, and i swear the dust has a mind of its own. i've tried fixatives, different papers, even just holding my breath when i work, but everything i touch seems to get smudged. it's driving me nuts. anyone else have this problem, or am i just cursed?

I recall wrestling with charcoal dust in my early days. The key, I found, was in the paper choice and a more patient layering technique. Have you experimented with a heavier-tooth paper, perhaps something designed for pastels? It can hold the pigment more securely. Also, consider using a very soft brush or chamois for blending rather than direct hand contact. It helps control the spread and minimizes accidental transfers.
thanks for the tips. i haven't tried paper for pastels, that's a good idea. always just grabbed whatever was cheapest at the art store lol. and the brush thing… i bet that would make a difference. i’m always just smearing it with my hand without thinking.
