what's the one line a gallery said to you that told you it was over before it started?
Mine: "we'll keep you on file." said with a smile while she was already half turned toward the next person. i knew right there. stayed another 20 min anyway, drank the bad wine, because i'd driven two hours.
what's yours. the polite sentence that actually meant no thanks.

"the work is very... personal." said slow, like personal was the diagnosis. i just nodded and said thank you, very aware my hands still had clay under the nails. honestly i think it means they didn't know where to put me, which is fair, i don't either.
i'd have drank the wine too. two hours of driving buys you at least that.
"personal as the diagnosis" is going to live in my head rent free. the pause before it does all the work. and yeah, they didn't know where to put you, but that's their problem, not a verdict on the work. clay under the nails is the tell that you were actually in it, they just wanted something they could shelve.
two hours driving absolutely buys the wine. i'd have gone back for a second glass on principle.
