Worst red flag you ever saw in a gallery before signing?

Okay I need stories because I almost walked into a trap this week. Gallery loved my work, talked all this big show stuff, then slid in "small admin fee" and I got that itch. Walked.

My worst one though was way back, first time I ever had a gallery interested. The owner kept calling my pieces "decorative" and said they'd need to see my "process documentation" before they'd commit. Real weird. I should've known the second they said that, but I was so desperate to be wanted I almost went along with it.

What's the biggest red flag you've seen from a gallery and did you get out in time? Or did you ignore it and pay for it later? Tell me I'm not the only one who's been this naive 😭

The "admin fee" thing is a classic. Any money flowing toward the gallery instead of away from it and I'm gone. That one's easy to spot.

Mine was subtler. A gallery wanted to represent me but kept talking about "brand synergy" and "content opportunities" and never once mentioned the work itself. Not the paint, not the light, nothing. Just what my "story" could do for their programme. I walked, and thank god I did, because I checked later and they'd turned into some kind of lifestyle space selling candles and prints of paintings they never actually showed.

"Decorative" though. That's insulting in a way that's almost efficient. At least they tell you what they think of you up front. Saved you the time.

"Lifestyle space selling candles" 😭 that is SO grim, I love that you checked. That's the thing, you can't even be flattered when they want you, because half the time they don't want YOU, they want some aesthetic to hang their whole brand on. The work is just the bait.

And yeah, "decorative" stung bad. Not just insulting, it told me exactly what they saw when they looked at my shit. Flat. Safe. Something that matches the sofa. I think I was more angry at myself for almost swallowing it than at them for saying it. Desperation does that though. You forgive things you shouldn't because you want it so bad.

Honestly stories like yours are why I posted this. Makes me feel less insane for walking on the admin fee thing.

The admin fee thing is the obvious one and you were right to walk. But I've learned the subtler flags are the ones that cost more time than money.

Worst I had was a gallery that loved my work, really talked it up, and then in the contract there was a clause about "artistic consultation" - they expected to have input on what I produced, which pieces went to which shows, that kind of thing. Not curation, mind you. Direction. That's when you find out if a place wants to sell what you make or wants you to make what they can sell. I was young enough to negotiate it down instead of walking, and I still regret the year I lost to that place.

The "process documentation" thing you got though. That's not a gallery, that's someone auditioning you for a role they haven't defined. You dodged a bullet before you even saw the gun.

see THIS is exactly what I mean, the admin fee is almost too easy to dodge. It's the ones that dress themselves up as "collaboration" and "support" that get you. "Artistic consultation", I would've been so flattered by that at 25 I'd have signed my whole life away. They make it sound like they believe in you when really they just want to run the show from behind the curtain.

Did you end up staying long or did the consultation thing sour it eventually? Because I have a feeling that kind of control doesn't stay in the contract, it creeps into everything.
