I've never once gotten a reply from a cold email. Not one. But the two actual gallery conversations I've had came from walking in somewhere with a small portfolio and just talking to whoever was at the desk like a human. Both times they said "email us" and both times nothing happened after lol. So what's the real move here? Do people actually land shows from cold outreach or is it all who you know and showing your face? Tell me I'm wrong, I want to be wrong, I'm tired of driving places with my work in the trunk hoping someone's in a good mood.

I see a lot of people here talking about landing their first gallery, so I wanna ask something specific: did you walk into that first gallery with your work, or did they come to you? For me it was the walk-in. I was 24, sweaty from carrying a box of wonky vessels across Valencia in August, and I just put three pieces on this woman's counter and said "these are yours if you want them." She laughed at me and bought one. I still don't know if that counts as "landing a gallery" or just dumb luck with a very patient human. Curious which way it went for the rest of you. Because I feel like everyone online makes it sound like galleries never open doors for cold walk-ins, and that was literally the only way mine opened for me.

I do a lot of walk-ins before I ever email. There was one place in the north of Greece, gorgeous space, good light, and I knew in about ten minutes I'd never want my work there. Not because of anything they said. It was the way they talked about their artists. "My painter," "my sculptor," like they owned them. Every artist was a possession. I thanked them and left. But I've also walked into a scruffy little basement space and felt right at home instantly. You can't always tell from the outside. What's the fastest you've ever ruled a gallery out, and what was the tell? Or the opposite, the one that looked wrong on paper and turned out to be exactly right?

Mine was pure nerve. I carried a portfolio of urban sketches into this small gallery near MG Road, fully expecting to be told they don't take walk-ins. The owner's assistant said they were busy, and I almost left, but I'd come all that way in the heat so I just stood there awkwardly until someone finally looked at my stuff. She flipped through maybe four pages and said "bring these back properly framed." That was it. No contract, no email, just that sentence. I got paid in the end, eventually, after chasing. But that one sentence changed everything for me. How did yours happen? Did you cold-walk like me, or did they spot your work online first?
