Forty kilos of rusted wire I found in a dismantled chicken coop became the best thing I've made this year
I spent three weeks untangling this wire. My hands were torn to shit. My studio looked like a murder scene made of rust. My son came over and asked if I'd finally lost it completely.
Hung it yesterday. It's just wire. Nothing added. The thing holds the space like it was always waiting to get out of that coop.
You don't get to choose what the good material is. You just have to be awake when it shows up. I was awake this time.

This is really something. I love that last line especially, "you just have to be awake when it shows up." I think that's true even with more ordinary materials. Sometimes I'll be at the craft store and a certain tube of paint just catches my eye and I know it's going to be part of something before I even know what.
Your son's reaction made me laugh. My youngest watched me trying to get the proportions right on a pear the other day and asked if I was "painting the same pear again." Yes, honey. Yes I am.
Would love to see a photo of it hung if you feel like sharing!
The pear comment got me. That's the whole thing right there, the same pear, every day, until it stops being a pear and starts being whatever you were actually after.
I'll send you a photo. Fair warning it looks like a wall of dead thorns. But it works.
