I keep a bucket of scrap stone under the bench and I don't know why
There's a five-gallon bucket under my main bench that's been collecting offcuts for two years now. Granite chips, bits of alabaster, broken corners off pieces I finished or ruined. I tell myself I'll use them for something someday. Mosaic maybe. Or just crush them for texture in a base.
I've never done it. I just keep dropping scraps in there and looking at it sometimes.
Some habits are just habits. Not everything needs a reason. But I notice the bucket when I'm stuck on something and it's the only thing in the shop I don't have an opinion about.

I have a drawer like this. Not even a drawer, a whole cupboard. Tubes of paint I squeezed once and decided the colour was wrong, canvases I cut down, a palette I scraped clean so many times the surface is like glass. I know exactly what you mean about it being the one thing you don't have an opinion about.
There's something honest about a collection that never became anything. No intention, no purpose. Just the physical residue of making things. I think we need that. A place where nothing is at stake.
The bucket stays.
Okay the palette with the glassy surface though, I have one of those and I swear it's become its own little artifact. I keep meaning to retire it and grab a fresh one and I just can't. Every smooth spot is a painting I forgot about until I mix on top of it and the ghost of some old color comes through.
I think that's why we keep this stuff. It's not about using it later. It's evidence. Like, look, I was here, I made things, some of them didn't work and that's fine. The bucket and the cupboard are just... the honest version of the studio. No pretending.
Yeah the palette thing is the same deal. It's got history on it. You can't just replace that.
The bucket's got a chip off a piece I did five years ago that I still think was some of my best work. And a chunk from something I dropped and wanted to throw across the room. Both in the same bucket. Doesn't sort it for you, just keeps it.
You said it. Nothing at stake. That's the whole thing. Everything else in here has a job to do or a decision attached to it. The bucket's just sitting there being what it is.
I bet that palette of yours has more life in it than half the new ones.
