My latest commission math and me wanting to lie down
Just finished the final invoice for that large mixed-media piece. Spent 3 weeks on it, materials were way more than I budgeted (who knew salvaged lace would get so pricey?), and my hourly rate worked out to something like $8 an hour. I’m almost afraid to raise my prices, but this isn’t sustainable. Feels like I'm stealing from myself.

Oh wow, $8 an hour? That's… really tough. It's so hard to charge what you're worth, isn't it? I struggle with that too, even when I know it's necessary. The materials cost surprise is so real, especially with unique things like salvaged lace. It's like, you think you've planned for everything, and then… BAM. I don't blame you for feeling like you're stealing from yourself. It's honest work and it deserves honest pay. Maybe you could try just a small increase on the next one? See how it feels? It's scary, I know, but you deserve better than that rate.
ugh yeah it's the worst. i keep thinking about that one quote, "i am robbing myself." feels about right. i'm going to try the small increase thing. maybe just tack on 20% and see if i can sleep at night.
