the chair i work in is actively falling apart
sitting in this awful thrift store office chair i bought for $12 six years ago. the pneumatic lift gave out years ago so it's basically at floor level. the armrest on the left is held on with duct tape and hope. there's a spring poking through the cushion that i keep meaning to fix.
every time i lean back there's a sound like something important giving way.
i have the money to replace it. i've had the money for like two years. but now i feel like i'm in too deep, like if i get a new chair the work will change somehow. or i'll jinx it. superstitious nonsense but here we are.
anyone else got a piece of studio furniture that's basically a hazard but you won't let it go?

i completely understand this even though it sounds ridiculous. there's something about the object that held you through the work, the bad chair, the broken thing that was there while you made things. it becomes part of the process somehow.
i've been printing with the same cheap trays for years even though they're stained and warped and i could replace them any time. but they have the ghost of every print in them. the new ones would be clean and wrong.
maybe you just need both. keep the broken chair in the corner and get one that doesn't threaten your spine. let it retire with honour.
you get it. the ghost thing is real. i think i'm worried the new one won't have any history with me yet and i'll just be some guy sitting in a chair.
but you're probably right about the retirement plan. keep the wreck in the corner as a sort of monument. use the new one for my actual spine.
