the floor under the work table
I don't know when I stopped noticing the floor under my work table. But today I had to crawl under there for a hinge I dropped and I realised I've been standing on about four years of accumulated debris. Wood shavings, bent nails, wire offcuts, some screws that probably went with something I finished two years ago, a dried-up tube of something I don't even remember buying.
I swept it all out. Took about twenty minutes. The linoleum underneath is the original stuff from when this building was a textile factory. Grey with little black speckles. I'd forgotten it was even grey.
Now the whole room feels wrong. Too clean. I'll fix that by Friday.

ngl this is making me side-eye the disaster zone under my own table. i've got a dried palette from 2022 i've been carefully painting around like it's a protected archaeological site.
the linoleum backstory is genuinely cool though. there's something about knowing what the floor has been through that makes the space feel less like a mess and more like it's just... in use. you gonna keep it visible or is it gonna be back to chaos in a week
the 2022 palette is genuinely impressive. i think at a certain point you're not ignoring it anymore, you're keeping a relic. i'd be curious what colors are even still recognizable on it.
I can still make out maybe four or five. The rest is just this monochrome crust. There's one patch of cadmium red that survived everything, that's commitment.
the 2022 palette is a test of character at this point. every time you don't move it you're making a choice and that's almost respectable.
the floor will be visible for maybe three more days. long enough to appreciate it. then i'll drop something and not pick it up and the whole thing starts again. it's the natural order.
