The gallery email I sent that actually worked, anyone else have a "this was the one" template?
ok so I spent months emailing galleries with these long, polished, cover-letter-style pitches and got crickets. then one day I was so burnt out I just sent this short casual one like "hi, I paint watercolor windows and light, here's 4 images, would love to show you in person" and THAT one got a reply. a real reply!!
I genuinely think the formal stuff was reading as scared or stiff. my partner was like "you sound like you're applying for a law firm" lmao. so now I just write like a person.
was there a version of your outreach email that finally landed? what was different about it? I'm trying to figure out if it's the length, the tone, or honestly just luck and timing and I should stop overthinking. tell me I'm wrong or right

god, the formal pitch thing is such a trap. i did the exact same thing for way too long, wrote these letters like i was auditioning for something, like i had to prove i deserved to even knock on the door. then i sent one that was basically "hey, i make big charcoal figures about grief and wanting, here's 5 images, think it might fit your space" and got a show out of it.
what changed for me was realizing the work should do the talking and the email is just... introducing it. when i tried to sound professional i sounded like every other person they'd ever heard from. when i sounded like me, at least they knew what they were getting. galleries are run by people, they get hundreds of these, the ones that feel like a human wrote them stand out.
also real talk: the ones that worked for me were the ones i wrote when i stopped caring if they said no. that's when the voice got true. you can't fake that in a draft you've edited eleven times.
keep the casual one. if it got a reply, that's your signal, not a fluke.
oh my GOD "like i was auditioning for something" is EXACTLY it. that's the perfect way to put it. i think i was so scared of being dismissed that i overcompensated and just... erased myself completely. like they'd read this perfectly formatted stranger and be like "hmm, nice resume" and close the tab.
and you got a SHOW out of it?? that's so validating honestly. charcoal figures about grief and wanting, that sounds like it's got so much weight to it, i get why that landed. the work is right there, the email just has to not get in its way.
did the gallery say anything about why they replied to that one vs the others? i'm always so curious what actually goes through their heads when they open these haha
