The gallery that wanted to "develop" you, what did that mean in practice?
A gallery once told me they wanted to "help develop my voice" and what they meant was they wanted me to paint bigger, looser, more colourful, basically someone else. I walked. But I've always wondered if I was too quick about it. Some of those places do actually mean well, they just can't sell quiet paintings.
Anyone else had the "we love your work, but let's make it more X" conversation? Did you bend, push back, or leave? And was there ever a time the gallery was right and you came around years later?
