the gallery tour that changed nothing

ever had a gallery walkthrough where the owner spent the whole time talking about how they'd want you to frame things differently, hang things differently, basically make different work? i had one last year where the guy kept touching a piece and saying "i'd crop this" every time. i stood there nodding for 45 minutes and left feeling like i'd shown up in the wrong clothes.

i still think about it and i still don't know if i should've pushed back or if that's just how it goes. what's the worst gallery feedback you ever took and wished you hadn't?

Oh this hits. I had one where the gallerist spent twenty minutes explaining why watercolour "doesn't read well on gallery walls" and maybe I should consider acrylic. Like I hadn't heard that before. As if the medium itself is the problem, not how it's hung or lit.

I think the worst part is you go in hoping for genuine feedback about the work, composition, mood, whether it connects, and instead you're getting styling advice from someone who's decided what your art should be before you even showed it. The cropping thing especially. That's such a weird thing to keep saying out loud.

I don't know if pushing back would've helped either. Those conversations feel loaded from the start because they have the space, you're the one asking to be there. But I've learned to trust my gut more since then. If someone's feedback is mainly about turning your work into something else, it's not really feedback, it's a wishlist.

the watercolour thing is wild. like yeah no shit it doesn't read the same as oil from across the room, that's kind of the point of it? it's supposed to pull you in close.

i think you're right about the styling advice vs real feedback thing. it's like they've already decided what the work should be and you're just there to execute their vision. not a conversation, a briefing.

Ah Jesus, I felt that in my bones. I had a fella years ago, running a little gallery up in Sligo, nice enough space, who spent a solid half hour explaining to me that linocut "wasn't really gallery work" and that I should think about "elevating" the material. He kept saying it like he was doing me a favour. "Have you considered etching? Something with a bit more... weight."

I was only a few years into it at that stage, and I walked out of there with the print under my arm thinking maybe he was right. Spent about three weeks feeling sideways about my own hands before I came to my senses.

The thing is, that kind of feedback isn't feedback, it's someone telling you they want a different artist. They want the work they'd make if they were you. And I've learned the hard way that nodding through it just leaves you sour.

I'd say if you're still thinking about it a year later, your gut knew something was off in the room. You don't lie awake over good advice. You lie awake over somebody making you feel small in your own work.

sligo guy sounds like he'd have preferred the work framed in gold with a little plaque under it. the "elevating" thing gets me every time, like the material's not good enough unless it's got some prestige attached. glad you came to your senses. took me longer than three weeks after mine, honestly.
