The piece I can't finish because it keeps getting better
I have this column of stacked window frames I rescued from a demolition in Žižkov. Old ones, painted maybe seven times, each coat a different decade peeking through. I've been working it for months and every time I add something it gets better, which sounds great until you realize it means the piece has no end in it. I can't find the point where adding another one ruins it. Usually I know that line by now, I've hit it enough times, ruined enough things. Not this one.
I think the problem is the material. The frames are doing all the work, all that layered paint and the warped sashes, and I'm just arranging good luck. So the piece never resolves, it just keeps being more of what it already is. That's a different failure than the usual one. With a bad piece you know where you went wrong. This one is all going right, which is somehow worse.
Anyone else had a piece that won't close because it won't stop working? I'd rather it fail so I could fix it.
