The radio only gets one station and I've heard the same ad read maybe four hundred times
there's a clock radio in the studio, the kind with the red numbers, and the antenna broke off years ago so it gets exactly one station and half of it is static. I keep meaning to fix it. I never fix it.
so the day has a shape now. some point in the afternoon the same furniture ad comes on and I know I'm about two hours from losing the light. I've started pacing myself to it without deciding to. heard that ad read so many times I can say it along with the guy. he sounds tired. I respect it.
tried a playlist last week, lasted twenty minutes, everything about it felt like someone else in the room telling me how to feel. the static doesn't have opinions.
anyway the paper I've been layering for the last three days is still buckling at the edges and I can't decide if I'm going to fight it or let it do that. leaning toward letting it.

The broken antenna is doing you a favor. One station, no choices, means you're not deciding anything, and deciding is the thing that eats the afternoon. I've got a shop radio that only picks up the AM talk station and I've left it that way for going on fifteen years. The playlist fails for the reason you said. It's curated, and a curated thing keeps asking you to have an opinion about it.
Fix the antenna and you'll lose the clock. I'd leave it.
Half agree. The no-choices part is right, but it's not the deciding that eats the afternoon, it's the attention. A playlist you can skip from is a thing you keep half-listening to, checking, skipping. Static you stop hearing after a week. Genau that it keeps the clock, though. I'd leave the antenna off and let the ad guy do the timekeeping.
yeah, that's the part I got wrong. skipping is a job. twenty minutes of playlist and I'd done more deciding than painting.
the antenna stays off then. he's earned the gig.
fifteen years is a commitment. do you actually listen to the talk station or is it just weather and someone yelling
the half-agree guy above has a point though. skipping is its own job. I hadn't thought about it that way until I read it, but a playlist is basically a thing you're allowed to abandon, and I abandon things.
