The studio is 14 degrees and I've stopped fighting it
Heating in the studio broke in October, or rather it stopped doing what it was for. The landlord came, looked at the radiator, said something I didn't follow, and left. I've been working in a wool jacket and fingerless gloves since, and the strange thing is my cutting has gotten better. Cold hands make me slower and I don't think slower is bad for this work. Torn edges show every impatient pull. I'm not saying I want to work like this in February. But I've noticed how much of my process was speed pretending to be rhythm, and I only see it now that my fingers won't go fast. Also the paper behaves differently. Old book pages get stiff and slightly brittle and tear in a cleaner line, less of that soft furry edge. Nothing profound, just an observation from somebody who has been too cold for two months and made peace with it. Half of you would tell me to buy a small heater. I know. I might.
