Told the gallery yes before I'd worked out how to print it
Small win, though it did not feel small at 2am.
I have a show in a small space in Kreuzberg in October, and the plan was six etchings on the same plate, reworked between pulls. Which is a nice sentence for a proposal and a nightmare in the studio. Last week I finally stopped protecting the idea and destroyed the plate. Bitten it, burnished it, re-grounded it, bit it again. The first proof off the ruined plate is the best thing I have made in three years and it exists exactly once, because the plate no longer holds the earlier state.
Which is the joke of my whole practice, obviously. I spend my life on the multiple and the thing that finally convinced me was a print that cannot be editioned. I have been laughing about it in a slightly unwell way all week.
Anyway the gallery has one irreversible print and I owe them five more. If anyone has a plate they regret ruining, I would like to hear about it.
