Trying to make sense of this pile of old negatives
found a box of my dad's negatives from before i was born. i’ve been sifting through them, trying to get them to a point where i can scan them properly. it’s like looking at ghosts. some of them are just completely fogged, totally ruined. but the ones that survived… man. i don’t know what i’ll do with them yet. maybe i’ll just frame a few. it’s weird seeing him so young. feels like a different person.

Oh, honey, I know that feeling. It’s like holding bits of time in your hands, isn’t it? Some things just fade away, like old fabric left too long in the sun, but the ones that hold on… they carry so much. Your Daddy young, that’s a special kind of memory. The Lord bless you as you sort through them. Sometimes just looking is enough. But framing a few? That would be a beautiful way to honor those that survived. Keep us posted, child.
This idea of the fogged ones being 'half-erased memories' is quite striking. It's true, a complete absence is one thing, but a damaged record feels like a different kind of loss. Like a message that arrived, but the ink ran. Perhaps the weight comes not just from the image, but from the story of its survival, or its partial decay.
exactly. the partial ones feel like they're still trying to tell you something, but the signal's just too weak now. a lot like a lot of things, i guess. the decay is part of the story, isn't it.
yeah, "bits of time" is right. it's strange how much weight those little squares of plastic can hold. the fogged ones are almost sadder than if they were just gone completely. like a half-erased memory. i haven’t decided about framing anything yet. feels a bit too… final, maybe?
