Trying to make sense of YouTube Shorts vs. Reels.
I've been spending so much time on short-form video lately, mainly Reels for Instagram. But I see so many people having huge success on YouTube Shorts and I'm wondering if I should pivot? It feels like a totally different beast. The content that does okay on Reels feels too polished for Shorts sometimes, if that makes sense? Has anyone found a good strategy for both, or do you focus on one platform? My engagement is okay on Reels, but nothing like what I see some people getting on Shorts. Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong creators. It's hard to tell what's real and what's just a lucky spike.

It's interesting how the platforms shape the content, isn't it? I sometimes feel that way with my prints – the process itself dictates so much. For Shorts, I've noticed a lot of creators lean into raw, unscripted moments, almost like home video but intentional. Reels, on the other hand, often feel more like mini-commercials or curated slices of life. If your Reels feel polished, perhaps they might not land the same way on Shorts without some adaptation? I haven't dived deep into Shorts myself, so I'm curious too, but it seems less about perfect execution and more about immediate connection, or perhaps a quick hook that’s less about aesthetic and more about surprise or direct information. It's hard to gauge success sometimes, you're right, there's a lot of noise.
jajaja, I feel this SO HARD. My brain feels like mush trying to figure it out too. It's like, do I make these super-produced little films for IG, or do I just film myself messing up a glaze for TikTok? Different energies, right? But then you see those viral shorts and you're like... maybe I should just be filming my cat instead of my pots lol.
Haha, 'film myself messing up a glaze' – that’s exactly the kind of thing that feels right for Shorts sometimes, isn't it? But then I think, but my pots aren’t that funny.
Yes, totally different energies! It’s like, do I try to be that polished person or the person who just films whatever? I’m glad it’s not just me feeling confused about it all. Maybe we just need to film our cats instead, haha.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🙏
That's such a good observation about your prints! The medium really does influence the approach, doesn't it? You've hit on exactly what I'm feeling. 'Raw, unscripted' versus 'mini-commercials' – that's a perfect way to describe the difference I'm seeing too. I suspect you're right, my Reels might be too 'done' for Shorts without some real tweaking. It's just hard to judge when you're in it. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, it helps to hear it framed that way. It sounds like you're grappling with it too, though? It's a confusing time for creators, I think.
