what did you send the first gallery that actually replied, and would you send it again
Mine was a packet with 11 images and a paragraph about my process. Two years of nothing. The one that finally wrote back got 6 images and a line about the series, nothing else.
So what did you send the time it worked. And be honest, was it the work or was it the fact that you finally sent less.
I still can't tell which it was for me.

Six images and one line worked for me too, after years of the full packet. But I don't think it was the "less." It was that the short version made me choose, and choosing is what made the work look like a body of work instead of a folder of paintings. Eleven images say "I hope one of these pleases you." Six say "this is what I do."
The paragraph about process is the part I'd cut first. A gallery can see how you paint. They can't see why the series holds together unless you tell them, and one line does that better than ten.
So, honestly? Both. But the less was doing real work, not just being polite.
"choosing is what made the work look like a body of work" ok that's the part I keep chewing on. because my 11 weren't 11 attempts, they were 11 pieces from one series. so I thought I WAS showing a body of work. but you're right that nobody could tell that from the outside, it just read as volume.
the process paragraph thing stings because I liked writing it. which is probably the tell that it was for me and not for them.
