Finished my granddaughter's wedding quilt two days before the wedding
My baby girl's wedding was last month and I finished her quilt two days before the ceremony. Two days, y'all. I been sewing since I could hold a needle and I still cut it that close. Every night for six months I was in that sewing room after supper, listening to my old radio, ripping out seams and re-doing them like a brand new girl.
She asked for her great-grandmother's pattern, the one my grandmother made for my own wedding back when we didn't have two nickels. I didn't have that quilt no more, but I had a scrap of it. Mama kept one corner of it all these years and gave it to me, and I sewed that little piece of history right into the center of hers. She cried when she saw it and so did I, and neither one of us was ashamed.
It ain't perfect. One seam on the back is a little crooked and I could see it clear as day every time I looked at it. But my grandmother used to say a quilt's got to have a mistake in it somewhere, because only the Lord makes things perfect. So I left it. Now I'm just glad it's done and out of my house before I had to look at it one more time, ha.

the scrap of it, that's the part that got me. all that history folded into one corner piece. my grandmother left me her old sewing box and i never opened it for years, just kept it on a shelf like a book i wasn't ready to read. when i finally did there was a half-finished thing in there she'd been working on. i finished it. worst seams i ever sewed, but i still have it.
two days before, though. you're braver than me. i'd have been curled up in a ball somewhere by then. she's lucky to have you.
Oh honey, that half-finished piece in that box, you finishing it was the bravest part of this whole story, not me and my two days. She probably sat down with that thing and got called away to supper and just never got back to it, and here you came along and closed the circle for her. Worst seams or not, that piece is yours now and it's got her blessing all over it.
And listen, don't let me fool you, I was curled up in a ball half the time, just under the quilt so nobody could see me. The Lord gives you the two days when you need 'em. That's the secret.
