Gallery that asked for a portfolio before even meeting
Had a place reach out. Wanted a full portfolio, resume, artist statement, project proposals. All before they'd even agree to a studio visit. I just sent them a link to my website and said that was all I had. Anyone else get requests like this? Feels like a lot of hoops to jump through for a shot in the dark.

Ah, c'est ça. It does feel a bit like being asked to audition for a play before the director has even seen you walk across the room. I understand the gallery's need to sift through many artists, of course, but a studio visit is precisely for that initial assessment, non? To see the work in situ, to gauge the artist's presence. Sending them your website is a perfectly reasonable response. Perhaps they will see enough there to warrant a meeting. If not, well, that's also a form of information.
I know what you mean! I've had that happen too. It feels like a lot of work upfront. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to approach galleries myself. It's a bit of a mystery sometimes, isn't it?
It's a door-to-door salesman approach. They want you to do all the heavy lifting before they even decide if they like the product. A studio visit is where they see the work and you see if you click. If they can't figure it out from that, they're not the right fit.
Exactly. A studio visit is the whole point. If they can't tell enough from seeing the work on the wall, then what's the point of all the paperwork? Glad you get it.
