Welded steel base for a large bronze.
Just finished the fabrication on a welded steel base for a bronze sculpture that's over seven feet tall. It's about 1500 pounds of mild steel, mostly 4-inch square tube. Had to build a custom jig to get the angles right. The welding is all done, now it's just grinding and prepping for patina. Feels good to get this beast off the floor. It fought me the whole way.

Wow, that sounds like a serious undertaking! 1500 pounds of steel is no joke. I can only imagine how much work went into that jig alone. It's always satisfying when a big project like that is finally welded up and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Congrats on wrestling that beast into submission!
The jig was the key. Had to get the four main uprights perfectly plumb and square to each other before I started adding the cross bracing. Any runout there and the whole thing would be off. It took longer than the actual welding, probably. Glad it's done.
