the gallery that ghosted you, what did you do?okay so i sent a really solid application to a small gallery i've admired for ages, like actually tailored the email, referenced specific artists they show, the whole thing. and then... nothing. not even an automated response. it's been three weeks and i keep checking my sent folder like maybe i imagined sending it lol. i know galleries get flooded and i know i'm being impatient but honestly the not-knowing is worse than a no. i'd genuinely rather get a "not for us, but thanks" than just radio silence. so what do you do when a gallery ghosts you? do you follow up once? twice? do you just write it off and move on? or have you ever had a ghost come back weeks later with a yes and felt insane about it??

The edition where every single print has the same faint registration ghost and I can't decide if it's a flaw or the actual pointI pulled an edition of screenprints this week, four colors, nothing complicated, and about halfway through I noticed the same faint ghost of the first layer showing up in the same spot on every single sheet. Not a misprint exactly. The registration is off by the same couple of millimeters each time, like the frame settled into a habit. Part of me wanted to scrap the lot and start over. But I kept looking at it and honestly the ghost is doing something for the piece. It reads like the image has a memory of itself. Which is funny because that's basically the whole question I keep circling in my own work, the copy and the trace and what the authentic original even is. And here it is, accidental, in forty identical sheets. I haven't decided yet. I printed a small edition last year where I burned the screens after pulling thirty and I still think about that. There's something about letting the imperfection be the edition that feels both like a cop-out and the most honest thing. Anyway. The work is leaning on it. Or I'm rationalising it. Hard to tell from inside.

client haggled me to £80, ghosted, then wanted four revisionscommission story, and then im quietly retiring from commissions forever. client wanted a custom portrait. haggled me down from 200 to 80 "because it's just one person, not a full scene." fine. my fault for saying yes. then ghosted for two weeks. then came back asking for four rounds of revisions, including, and i quote, "can you make her look happier but also more mysterious." i have earned roughly eight pounds an hour to be told my work isnt mysterious enough. im done. originals only from here on

the gallery that ghosted you, did you ever go back?I got ghosted by a gallery back in the 90s. Sent slides, got a nice letter, went in person, they loved the work, said they'd call. Never did. I called them twice, got nothing but receptionists. Took the hint and moved on. I hear people talk about following up until you get an answer. I don't buy it. When a gallery wants your work they call you back. You ever chase one down, got the show, and it was worth it? Or is the silence always the answer?

the gallery that strung me along for months and then ghosted, anyone else?okay I need to know if this is just me or if this is like, a rite of passage. I spent FOUR MONTHS talking to a gallery last year. Emails back and forth, sent them a whole portfolio, they loved it, we talked about a show timeline, I got my hopes way up. Then nothing. I followed up twice, polite, casual, and just got radio silence. Not even a "we went another direction." Just disappeared into the void. I was so embarrassed I didn't tell anyone for months lol like I'd been scammed by a situationship. Has this happened to you? What's the longest a gallery has strung you along before ghosting? Or did you ever get a follow-up years later that made it make sense? I need solidarity here 😭

the gallery that ghosted me after the handshake dealokay so I keep thinking about this and I wanna know if I'm the only one this has happened to. I had a gallery owner literally shake my hand at a studio visit, say "these are perfect, let's get you on the books," and then... nothing. never heard from them again. I followed up twice, polite but not pushy, and just got radio silence. did this happen to anyone else?? like is this just part of the game or did I do something wrong? I'm still pretty new to this whole gallery thing and I honestly don't know if I should've been more aggressive or if they just got busy and forgot or what. my take rn is that handshake means nothing until there's a signature but man it stung a little haha. tell me your ghosting stories so I don't feel like the only one 🥲

the gallery that ghosted you after the showok what's the worst gallery ghosting story you've got. not the rejection, i mean the ones that actually showed your work and then just... evaporated. i had one where the owner went completely dark after the closing. wouldn't answer emails, wouldn't return paintings. i had to show up in person three months later and she acted like she'd never met me. got my work back but she still owes me like $800. at this point it's the principle. anyone else get fully erased post-show or was that just my lucky break

the gallery that ghosted me after a great meeting, anyone else?ok story time because I need to know if this is just a me thing. I had a first meeting with a gallery owner back in March, it went SO well, she loved the work, talked about a possible show for fall, said she'd email me. And then... nothing. I followed up twice, got one "so sorry, crazy month!" and then radio silence again. It's been like four months. I keep going back and forth between "she forgot, email again" and "she's just not that into you, read the room, Dani." has anyone actually had a ghost turn into a yes after enough persistence? or is silence always the answer? and be honest, how many times did you email before you gave up?

I ghosted my own Instagram for two months and something weird happenedI had a big print deadline, 40 editions for a group show in Milan, and I just stopped posting. No stories, no carousels, no polite little "in the studio" clips. Nothing for almost nine weeks. I was sure my engagement would be dead when I came back. Instead I gained followers. Not a lot, but more than I did in the three months before where I was posting twice a week. And the people who messaged me were actual humans I've met or worked with, not the usual ghost likes. I don't know what to make of this. Maybe the algorithm prefers scarcity. Or maybe when you're not performing, the only people who show up are the ones who actually care about the work. Which is a nicer thought but also harder to monetise, so I'm not sure it's useful. Anyone else had the experience of doing less and getting more?

The gallery that ghosted me for 4 months and then emailed like nothing happenedOkay I need to know if this is just me or if this is normal because I'm still kind of reeling from it haha. So I reached out to this gallery back in like... April? Small-ish contemporary space in a city a few hours from me, really liked their vibe, sent a thoughtful email with some images. Heard nothing. Cool, whatever, I figured it was a no and moved on. Then in August I get this email from them like "hey! we'd love to see more of your work, are you free to chat next week?" No apology for the 4 month silence, no explanation, just acting like we'd been in conversation the whole time. I was so thrown I almost didn't reply but I did and the conversation actually went fine? But I still can't tell if this is just how galleries operate sometimes or if it's a red flag I should've ran from. What's the longest a gallery has left you hanging before getting back to you, and was it worth it in the end? Did they turn out to be great to work with or was the ghosting a sign of what was coming? I need stories so I know whether to feel good about this or not lol.

Ever been ghosted by a gallery and then it came back around?I had a gallery in Paris go completely silent on me for a full year after an initial meeting. No replies, nothing. Then out of nowhere they emailed asking if I was still painting, and wanted to see new work. I was so annoyed I almost didn't answer. But I did, and it turned into a show that paid for itself twice over. I've heard this is more common than anyone admits, galleries that are just disorganised, not cruel. But I've also heard plenty of horror stories where it was a total waste of time. Has a gallery ever ghosted you and then come back? Did you take the second chance or tell them where to go?

The endless fascination with the ghost imageWorking on a new screenprint series, and I keep getting stuck on the 'ghost' image. You know, the faint residue left on the screen after a print? It's not the 'real' image, but it has this strange, ephemeral quality. I find myself obsessing over it, wondering if it's more potent than the actual print. It feels like a memory of the image, or a potential for future images. Anyone else find themselves drawn to these accidental afterlives of a print?

the first gallery that took me seriously ghosted me for three months before saying yesokay so I finally landed my first gallery showing last year and the whole process was honestly such a mess I'm still not sure I did it right. I cold-emailed like 12 galleries, heard back from TWO, one of which was a "thanks but no thanks" and the other took three months to respond and then acted like we'd been in conversation the whole time?? I was so nervous I basically wrote an essay about myself in every email and I cringe looking back but also... it worked?? eventually?? I want to hear your gallery origin stories honestly, how did you land your first one? Did you walk in somewhere, did you email, did someone see your work somewhere else? Tell me I'm not the only one who had no idea what they were doing and just faked it til something stuck.

the gallery that ghosted me after 3 months of emailsokay I need to know if this is just me or if this is universal, how did you land your first gallery showing? like the real first one, not the group show your friend curated. I've been sending portfolios out for months and the closest I've gotten is a gallery that was really warm via email for three months, asked for more photos, said they'd "circle back," and then just... stopped replying. I followed up twice and nothing. I don't even know if I should keep emailing them or take the hint. my own answer is honestly embarassing, my first "gallery" thing was a coffee shop that let me hang stuff near the bathroom. which was nice! but I'm trying to level up and I feel like I'm doing something wrong. tell me your first real gallery story, good or bad. did you email? walk in? know someone? I need to know what actually works vs what we're all just guessing at

The gallery that ghosted meSent my stuff to a gallery back in january. they said they loved it and would be in touch about a group show. still waiting. anyone else dealt with this? how long do you wait before assuming it's a no?

The gallery that ghosted me for eight months, then wrote back like nothing happened. Worst wait you've been through?I sent a portfolio to a small gallery last spring and heard nothing. Fine, I thought, that's normal. Then nothing for months. I had honestly written it off, told myself my work just wasn't for them, maybe wasn't for anyone. Eight months later I get an email, warm as anything, "lovely to hear from you, we'd love to see more." No apology, no explanation. Like we'd been mid-conversation the whole time. I didn't know whether to be thrilled or annoyed. I replied anyway, obviously, because I'm a glutton for it. 😅 What's the longest you've waited? And did the reply, when it finally came, feel worth it or did it just make you mad all over again?

the painting i ghosted for two months finally let me back inhad a canvas sitting against the wall since april. every time i walked past it i'd say "tomorrow" and then tomorrow was july. painted over the same corner like six times, hated all six. finally guilted myself into just sitting with it last night and it came together in like three hours. not even the hard part, it was the same green i'd been fighting the whole time. it was never the paint, it was me avoiding the thing it was asking for. anyway it's done now and i don't know if it's good but it's resolved and that's close enough. holding onto that feeling for the next inevitable stretch where everything looks like mud.

Ever had a gallery ghost you after showing interest?asked to see more work, sent it, and then nothing for three months. i followed up twice, polite and normal about it, and crickets. then they reposted one of my pieces on their story like we were old friends?? didn't mention it, didn't reply, just vibes. i honestly don't know if that's a soft no, a mix-up, or if they just live in a state of permanent chaos. my gut says let it go but the petty part of me wants to email them every full moon just to see what happens. is this a normal part of gallery life or did i just catch a weird one? what do you do when a gallery goes quiet after showing interest?

the gallery that ghosted after saying yesWhat's the most unprofessional thing a gallery has done to you, after they already took your work? I'll go first. A gallery in another city confirmed a solo show, dates locked, contract signed. Two months before, I emailed to check in about shipping logistics. Nothing. A week later, nothing. I finally got someone on the phone and they said, I swear, "oh, we decided to push you to next season." No call, no email, nothing. I found out because I called them. The show never happened. They just... stopped answering. I know we all have one. What's yours?

the gallery that said yes but I still got ghosted, anyone else?ok so I finally got a "we'd love to work with you" from a gallery I'd been chasing for months. did the whole song and dance, sent the portfolio package, agreed on a timeline, everything felt like it was happening. and then... nothing. just radio silence. they stopped replying to emails. I sent a polite check-in two weeks later, nothing. another one a month later, nothing. still have no idea what happened. I keep going back and forth between "maybe they just got swamped" and "I definitely did something wrong and I don't even know what." has this happened to anyone else?? did they ever resurface or did you just write it off? I need to know if this is just how it goes sometimes or if I'm the only one sitting here like 👁️👄👁️ staring at my sent folder
